Equifax Inc. Cybersecurity Incident – September 7, 2017

Equifax announced a cybersecurity incident that potentially impacts approximately 143 million U.S. consumers. Based on the company’s investigation, the unauthorized access occurred from mid-May through July 2017. The information accessed primarily includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver’s license numbers.

Equifax has established a dedicated website,, to help consumers determine if their information has been impacted and to sign up for credit file monitoring and identity theft protection. The offering, called TrustedID Premier, includes 3-Bureau credit monitoring of Equifax, Experian and TransUnion credit reports; copies of Equifax credit reports; the ability to lock and unlock Equifax credit reports; identity theft insurance; and Internet scanning for Social Security numbers – all complimentary to U.S. consumers for one year.

It is also recommended that consumers be vigilant in reviewing their account statements and credit reports, and immediately report any unauthorized activity to their financial institutions. Consumers can also visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website,, to obtain information about steps they can take to better protect against identity theft as well as information about fraud alerts and security freezes.

Consumer Scam Alert: Do Not Use Federal Reserve Routing Account Numbers to Pay Bills; Could Face Late Fees, Other Charges

Recently, the Federal Reserve Banks have received a number of unauthorized transactions in which consumers have tried to use the Fed's routing numbers and their Social Security numbers to pay their bills.

It is important for consumers to know that when making online or e-check bill payments, they cannot use Federal Reserve routing numbers. Federal Reserve routing numbers are used for sorting and processing payments between banks. Any video, text, email, phone call, flyer, or website that describes how to pay bills using a Federal Reserve Bank routing number or using an account at the Federal Reserve Bank is a scam.

The Federal Reserve provides banking services only for banks. Individuals do not have accounts at the Federal Reserve.

The bill payments being attempted using the Fed's routing numbers are being rejected and returned unpaid. Consumers who have attempted to use the Fed's routing numbers to pay their bills may be subject to penalty fees from the company they were attempting to pay.

PARDA has identified cardholders that could be affected by the possible breach and have taken steps to mitigate fraud from occurring on the cards, including issuing card replacements and increased monitoring on exposed cards

How can members safeguard their accounts?


Chipotle has recently detected unauthorized activity on the network that supports payment processing for purchases made in their restaurants. They have begun an investigation with the help of leading cyber security firms, law enforcement and their payment processor. The focus is on card transactions in their restaurants that occurred from March 24, 2017 through April 18, 2017.

PARDA has identified cardholders that could be affected by the possible breach and have taken steps to mitigate fraud from occurring on the cards, including issuing card replacements and increased monitoring on exposed cards until the scheduled close date on May 16, 2017.

  1. Monitor accounts for unauthorized activity, and report any unauthorized activity immediately.
  2. Once your new card is received and activated, please call in and let us know the exposed card can be closed immediately.
